since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don’t cry
- the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids’ flutter which says

we are for each other; then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life’s not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis

E.E. Cummings, ‘since feeling is first’.

This poem truly inspires me. The unconventional rhyme scheme and enjambment, the way he has positioned the ideas, everything creatively possible. But most of all, it reminds me that you should never let any worries, like death, rule over you, and not give into reason. Always follow how you feel, and never let anyone sway you from doing otherwise. It has changed me as a person, and therefore my life.

When I first met my boyfriend, this poem described exactly how I felt. Why in life should we follow the norm? Why can’t things just be done because we feel them. I followed my heart because of this poem, and we’re really happy together 9 months down the line…

Trust me. This poem is your friend, it will not let you down.
